How Often Should You Actually Get Your Car Detailed?
Share
This is one of the most common questions we get — and the honest answer is that it depends on several factors. But there are some solid general guidelines that apply to most car owners in the Hampton Roads area.
For the exterior, a maintenance wash every two to four weeks is ideal for keeping contaminants from bonding to the paint. Pollen, salt air, bird droppings, and tree sap are all present in significant quantities in coastal Virginia. The longer these sit on the paint, the harder they are to remove without causing damage. If your car is garaged and not driven daily, you can stretch that interval. If it sits outside and takes on a lot of highway driving, lean toward the shorter end.
Paint decontamination — a clay bar treatment to remove embedded contaminants the wash can't reach — should happen once or twice a year for most vehicles. You'll know it's time when your paint feels rough to the touch even after a thorough wash.
Interior detailing frequency depends entirely on how you use your car. Families with kids and pets should aim for a thorough interior every two to three months. Professionals who use their car mostly for commuting and keep it relatively clean can go six months between full interior services. Everyone should at least vacuum and wipe down surfaces monthly.
If your car has a ceramic coating, the maintenance schedule changes slightly. Coated cars are easier to wash and repel contaminants more effectively — but they still need to be washed regularly. Neglecting a coated car allows contamination to build up in a way that's harder to remove and can degrade the coating over time. An annual maintenance detail and decontamination is recommended for coated vehicles.
